The five year battle for compensation by a number of victims in the UK is over, and the victims and their families have learned that they will be receiving their compensation in a matter of months after five long years of fighting for justice. Hundreds of people and families have been affected, and the battle stems around the victims that were exposed to asbestos on a daily basis at the Washington Chemical Company.
Over one hundred former workers of the company have already died from asbestos related disease while the five year battle was being fought. However, for the relations of the deceased and for the surviving victims of asbestos exposure, the compensation payouts will now start being paid out and those affected by the asbestos exposure will finally receive a payout for their injuries or for the loss of a loved one to asbestos related disease.
Compensation payouts for the affected workers were frozen in 2001 after the parent company of the Washington Chemical Company went into administration. The deal that has finally been agreed will see victims and families of victims sharing £36 million GBP, with some payouts expected to exceed over one hundred thousand Great British Pounds.
Eighteen months ago, company bosses offered a compensation deal that would have seen those entitled to compensation receive under twenty percent of the amount to which they were entitled. However, it is now hoped that those making claims will receive around eighty percent of the amount to which they would be entitled.
