Two lawmakers from Oregon have approached the Environmental Protection Agency in the United States for assistance in dealing with an asbestos ridden area.
The two republicans, Senator Gordon Smith and Congressman Greg Walden, have petitioned the EPA asking the agency to invest a quarter of a million dollars on dealing with the asbestos riddled area in Klamath Falls after the two of them were approached for help by homeowners.
The homeowners in the area asked the two republicans to write to the EPA and petition them for assistance in dealing with the asbestos issue. The money that has been asked for would fund the maintenance of the asbestos contaminated area while residents vacate. The time during which the residents are not there would be used for the EPA to run tests and clean up asbestos contaminated materials.
The EPA has stated that it cannot yet comment on the extent of the clean up that will be required in the area. This is despite a number of clean up activities in the area. Currently settlement talks are ongoing between the developers of the subdivision and local residents.
