Authorities in the UK have warned bogus asbestos removal men may be on the prowl, and have warned businesses to be very wary and to keep an eye out for anything untoward. The warnings have been issued by Environmental Health officials in West Cumbria. Complaints have been received by the authorities over the last week with regards to bogus asbestos removal officials.
The Trading Standards agency is also set to get involved in a bid to crack the bogus asbestos removal contractors, and the agency will be working closely with the local council in order to investigate and get to the bottom of the bogus contractor issue. The contractors are apparently contacting businesses and telling them that they need a certificate to prove there is no asbestos on the premises.
One official spokesperson stated: “Last month we had reports of the scam in Keswick. Now we have had a report from a business owner in Workington who had been contacted and told the business needed a certificate. This is not true. The Council is always happy to give advice on these situations and would urge anyone who has been contacted or needs advice about asbestos to get in touch with us.”
