A human society in Clifton has been ordered by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to remove asbestos from its building. In order to carry out the asbestos removal, the cats and dogs living at the site will have to be temporarily re-homed so that work can be carried out safely and without creating any health hazards for the animals. The Roice-Hurst Humane Society will be undertaking the work right away, and the building will therefore be closed down until mid October.
Christopher Aguiniga, director of the humane society, stated: “OSHA told us that we had to get the asbestos removed by the end of the month. The asbestos has been here for a little bit, but we haven’t had the money to get it taken care of.”
It was revealed that the society already owes around $1,000 in fines to OSHA and has been issued a number of citations. Although the levels of asbestos are not said to be that high, officials state that it is present in the ceilings of the building.
One official stated: “The humane society has been extremely cooperative for a small business with only eight employees. We issued a variety of citations for the asbestos, and the society chose to remove the asbestos rather than managing it to avoid potential exposure.”
