Britain is already in the throes of a mesothelioma epidemic, and there are concerns according to the Sunday Times Magazine, that little is being done to control or address the issue.
It has been reported that the death toll from asbestos related diseases, such as mesothelioma, is rising dramatically each year, and that by the year 2050 around 185,000 sufferers will have died from asbestos related disease.
Specialists have described the situation in Britain as a national disaster that kills nearly two thousand people each year.
The number of deaths has already increased hugely since 1990, and it is estimated that the worst is still to come.
The peak of the epidemic is estimated for 2015, and at this point it is thought that Britain will be dealing with up to 6200 deaths.
It is thought that the epidemic will last until around 2050, and that’s a best case scenario in the event that no further cases of asbestos exposure are experienced. However, Britain is filled with DIY enthusiasts that work on their homes oblivious to the fact that their homes may be rife with asbestos.
Unfortunately, as is the case with many countries, resources, funds and education relating to mesothelioma and asbestos-related disease are severely lacking.
This adds to the difficulty in dealing with a disease that is likely to send shockwaves through the country within the next decade or so.
