The number of cases of mesothelioma are rising all over the world, including the UK where many builders, miners and other building tradesmen were exposed to asbestos dust and fibers several decades ago.
As with many other countries, asbestos was widely used in the UK until the mid-1970s for insulation amongst other uses.
Many workers and tradesmen were oblivious to the dangers of the asbestos and continued to work with this hazardous material without adequate protection.
As a result, many of these people are now discovering that they contracted a deadly disease whilst working with asbestos all those years ago, and due to the long latency period of the disease the symptoms are only just coming to light.
The disease is mesothelioma, a deadly cancer that can take decades to manifest following exposure to asbestos.
As the number of victims and diagnoses continue to rise, experts, victims and families have raised concerns over the lack of education and resources available to UK sufferers of asbestos-related disease.
Although there are plenty of legal firms that are able to help victims, education about the disease – even amongst health professionals – is considered poor.
There is also concern over the lack of support and information sources in the UK.
The British Medical Association has already expressed its concerns about the disease, which is not set to peak in the UK for another fifteen or twenty years.
It has been stated that doctors, health professionals, and patients need increased support and education about this cancer.
