Asbestos abatement and clean up is underway at Killingly High School after asbestos was found in the auditorium. An abatement company has been contracted by the school to complete the clean up over the next 10 days, making the area safe again and ready for when students return to the school.
Superintendent of Schools, William Silver said: "It is 10 days and counting. But we believe we have plenty of time to get the work done before school starts." The asbestos company has been contracted to complete the work as quickly as possible in order to minimize the disruption.
The company that will be carrying out the abatement work is Oscar Abatement Co. The costs are likely to exceed $218,000, which is more than had originally been budgeted for the project.
A spokesperson stated that the asbestos problem had been known about for some time, and that it had been monitored for years. However, the problems arose after the tiles began to chip and asbestos was removed.
