Georgia has been listed by the US Geological Survey as having the highest number of former asbestos sites and mines along the East coast. North Georgia and areas near the state line have been identified as having many of the former mines and sites. In terms of numbers, the report indicates that Georgia has 26 former asbestos prospecting sites and 17 former asbestos mines.
Among the areas in which the asbestos sites and mines have been found are Rabun County, Barrow, Cherokee, Coweta, DeKalb, Habersham, Hall, Hancock, Jackson, Meriwether, Morgan, Paulding, Towns, Troup and Walton counties.
Georgia is normally known for its beautiful scenery and natural beauty, but this report gives the area a more dubious honor. Asbestos is a substance that was once widely used for a number of purposes. However, its use was banned after it was discovered that exposure to asbestos fibers and dust could cause a number of health problems including mesothelioma, a deadly asbestos related cancer.
