A 100 year old school is to be closed down after asbestos was discovered during a roofing job, as well as a number of other problems that came to light. The decision to close the school was made by the Southern Oregon School Board, and additional problems included water damage and mold problems.
One parent told the school board: "No matter who says what, I would never feel safe sending my kids there again." However, parents had also told the school board that if they could guarantee the problems could be eliminated then they would support the repair of the building.
In response to this, one of the board members told parents: "We can't give any assurances. No matter how much money we spend, or engineers we bring in, we can never guarantee you that the school will be OK."
The cost of repairing the evident problems would have come to over half a million dollars according to officials, but if the school is replaced then the cost would spiral to over fourteen million. Options are still being looked at.
