Asbestos Clean-Up Planned By EPA

Public information meetings are to be arranged with residents of the Milltown area, so that the Environmental Protection Agency can update them and answer any questions relating to the asbestos clean-up at the former Michelin Powerhouse building and site.

Mayor Gloria Bradford stressed the importance of the asbestos removal. She stated: "I am very comfortable that the asbestos will be removed safely according to asbestos-removal procedures. The area is being cleaned up of all pollutants."

The project will involve cleaning up insulation, materials, and areas of exposed asbestos, as well as affected soil. The mayor added that the area had been unsafe for around four decades, and something should have been done about it a long time ago.

Asbestos is a potentially deadly substance that is known to cause a variety of health problems including a deadly form of cancer known as mesothelioma.
