A section of the Robinson School construction site in Bayonne has been shut down amidst fears that there may be asbestos on the site. Officials from the Bayonne Board of Education have been working to ensure the safety of school staff and workers since they were told about the possible condition.
Although asbestos presence is suspected, tests have been carried out to confirm this and officials state that they are still waiting on the results. The project being worked on was to have a three story extension added to the school, which authorities were hoping would be completed by September of this year.
Officials were apparently tipped off in July that there may be asbestos on the site, and since that time have been monitoring the construction site. The Department of Community Affairs actually ordered the building to be closed later in July, and also ordered the Education Board to hire licensed asbestos safety and removal contractors.
The suspected asbestos was discovered on a 20 foot length of piping, which was uncovered by a contractor during the dismantling of a staircase.
