New legislation relating to claiming compensation for asbestos related disease has brought relief to many sufferers in Northern Ireland, as it means that they will now be able to claim the full amount of compensation due to them from employers that exposed them to the toxic material.
The legislation comes after the Prime Minister Tony Blair intervened to overturn a ruling that came about earlier in the year, where law lords stated that any compensation would have to be split between all companies if a number of employers were involved in the exposure.
The previous legislation meant that some people were given the near impossible task of tracking down every employer that could have been responsible for their exposure to asbestos. The new legislation was introduced by the Department of Constitutional Affairs after Tony Blair stepped in.
One lawyer, who has and still represents a number of people affected by asbestos related disease, stated that news of the legislation comes as something of a relief to her clients, as it makes it easier for them to claim the compensation to which they are entitled.
