The president of a leading Indian asbestos-manufacturing firm, Ramco Industries Limited, has stated that the claims that all asbestos causes lung cancer and other types of disease and cancer are unfounded. Mr Raja was addressing a press conference when he made his statement, and he went on to state: “The campaign was on at the behest of a lobby led by G I Sheet Manufacturers and there was no truth in their saying that asbestos causes many health problems, including lung cancer.”
Mr Raja did not deny that studies throughout Europe and the United States had shown that asbestos was the leading cause of an exposure-related disease known as mesothelioma, a cancer of the lung, heart of abdominal cavities. However, he did state that the cause of mesothelioma was the blue fibre in the asbestos and no the while fibre.
Raja went on to state that the Indian government had banned the use of the blue fibre in asbestos over ten years ago, in 1993. He said that all Indian asbestos manufacturers use the white fibre only, which is though to have no ill effects, and that the dangerous blue fibre is never used.
Extensive studies on Europe and America have shown that asbestos exposure can result in a range of
health problems, the most notable of which is the terminal cancer,
mesothelioma.
