The Massachusetts State Department of Environmental Protection has fined a Westminster builder a massive $20,000. The fine was imposed after the Department discovered six violations of asbestos-product, the leading cause of the deadly cancer mesothelioma, mishandling by the builder.
The actual fine exceeded $56,250 but $36,250 was suspended with the remaining $20,000 payable to the state in five instalments of $4000.
The builder is a trustee for Benjamin Builders Realty Trust, and the violations related to work carried out at 83 Knower Road according the Department of Environmental Protection. The violations resulted from the builder removing, handling and storing dry asbestos-related material at the site, which resulted in air pollution. The builder also failed to inform the Department of Environmental Protection about the asbestos-product related works that were being carried out.
Westminster Health Agent, Mathew Moran, started that there was no risk to residents within the area, but that the matter was “strictly between the DEP and them." Mr Moran also went on to state that the Westminster Board of Health was simply informed about the incident as a matter of courtesy and not due to the health risks of any residents.
The violations identified by the Department of Environmental Protection included failure to properly label products, failure to seal asbestos in suitable container, and improper storage of products.
Should the building firm violate the regulations again within the next twelve months the remaining $36, 250 from the original fine can be demanded by the state.
