A woman whose husband died from an asbestos related disease has received an undisclosed sum of compensation. The amount that Sheila Wood is said to have received has been described as ‘substantial’ although no information was given with regards to the actual figure.
Mr. Harold Wood worked at Vickers Shipyard and then went on to work for British Rail. It was in these places that he was exposed to asbestos dust and fibers, and then went on to develop the asbestos related cancer known as mesothelioma.
Mr. Wood died in October 2004, at sixty-four years of age. He had only been diagnosed with mesothelioma four and a half months earlier. Mr. Wood was just fifteen when he was first exposed to asbestos. Part of his job at the shipyard used to involve walking through asbestos laden areas in order to deliver messages.
He went on to work for British Rail, where he had to clean steam engines and sweep away asbestos dust. He then went back to work as a fireman at the shipyard, where once again he was exposed to asbestos.
