Around a dozen workers that were undertaking maintenance jobs at Central and Western Middle Schools have had to file accident reports and get chest x-rays after asbestos was dislodged onto the gymnasium floors as a result of work being done on the roof.
Union workers have stated that the contractors were placed at risk as a result of the failure to inform them of the risks of falling asbestos. Also, the danger was heightened because the areas were not sealed off, stated union officials that represent the workers.
One of the Union shop stewards stated: 'It's the uncertainty. If people were forthcoming in the beginning, more than likely we would not have had to do it. But the problem with asbestos is what you can't see.'
However, authorities have responded to this by stating that all necessary testing and precautions were taken. Tony Byrne, district facilities director, stated: 'All the air tests came back negative. The state told us we had no obligation to notify anyone because it was such a minute amount.'
