It has been revealed that millions of homes across America could be at risk of asbestos contamination, due to a mineral called vermiculite, used in insulation products.
The Bush Administration Office stated that the mineral, commonly sold under the name Zonolite for many years, could be present in tens of millions of homes across America. If disturbed, this mineral could cause contaminated dust particles to become airborne, putting families at risk of ingestion, disease, and mesothelioma.
However, any homeowners that are concerned about this should not rip out any insulation as this could disturb the fibres. A ssistant administrator for the Office of Prevention, Pesticides, and Toxic Substances at the EPA, Stephen L Johnson, stated: “If left undisturbed we don’t believe that there is any risk to consumers.”
However he went on to state that it is unknown how much asbestos is contained within this type of insulation or what the risks of exposure are to the families living in these houses.
Vermiculite is a gravel-like substance, and can seep through ceiling cracks, hence it was recommended that homeowners check their attics for signs of the substance. It was also advised that children be kept away from any possible risk areas.
Any household that wishes to have the insulation removed should only do so by calling in a trained asbestos removal firm, and should never attempt it themselves.
