The English and Welsh National Health Service has blocked the widespread use of a drug designed to treat the asbestos related cancer known as mesothelioma.
The drug, Alimta, has been banned from use for treatment by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. The Institute has recommended that the drug now only be used as part of ongoing or new clinical trials.
The institute also stated that there was not sufficient evidence to suggest that Alimta was more effective and better than cheaper alternatives. However, the institute has been criticized by some, who state that because of this decision many patients suffering from the asbestos related cancer may be left worse off.
One consultant from Christie Hospital NHS Trust in Manchester, said: "This decision, if upheld, will remove a very useful treatment option for patients with this resistant cancer. It is contrary to the scientific evidence and is purely based on the value Nice place on a person's life."
