Asbestos contamination has been discovered at a development project site. The samples were taken from the Citadel Plaza redevelopment grounds in Kansas, and according to reports practically every sample was contaminated with asbestos.
An environmental study that was carried out into the retail development projects estimated at $103 million showed that the contamination was widespread. Contamination was found around existing homes in the area as well as on cleared lots and in the debris of demolished homes.
Kansas City Health Department Director Rex Archer wrote in a memo to city council members and city officials: “The Citadel Plaza redevelopment project contains the degree of contamination that will require extensive cleanup and remediation.”
He added: “From a public health perspective, this is good news as there appears to be no significant threat to the public from airborne asbestos fibers.”
