The Institute of Medicine has recently reported that asbestos exposure could be linked to the onset of cancer of the larynx. Asbestos is a carcinogenic that is already known to cause mesothelioma, a deadly cancer that can affect the lungs, abdomen, or heart. The Institute of Medicine had been asked by the Senate to see whether the substance could also have possible links to other forms of cancer.
After carrying out some studies, researchers from the Institute stated that there appeared to be enough evidence to suggest that laryngeal cancer could be linked to asbestos exposure, with the link being formed through data from nine different studies.
Certain cancers of the larynx, involving the area that holds the vocal cords, were linked to asbestos. Other cancers were also mentioned, and although there was a suggestion of a connection between these and asbestos, it was noted that the evidence was not conclusive.
Asbestos was once widely used in all sorts of applications such as the manufacture of various household products and also in building works and popularly as insulation.
