A man has been awarded $5 million in a case involving a refrigeration company as one of the defendants by a San Francisco jury after he was allegedly exposed to asbestos on the course of work during the 1970s and ‘80s. James Morrison, an HVAC mechanic, stated that he was exposed while working in California for Copeland Corp, a refrigeration equipment company.
Morrison claimed that he was working on Copeland compressors when he was exposed to asbestos, and it was in 2004 that the non-smoker was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
When the suit was originally filed, a number of defendants were named by Morrison and his wife, but Copeland was the only remaining one by the time the case went to trial. It is estimated that Copeland was around 12.4% responsible for the plaintiff’s injuries.
Other named defendants were found to be over 75% responsible for the man’s injuries, and Morrison himself was also found to be over 12% responsible.
