The Milwaukee County Courthouse has been undergoing works in order to demolish an annex, which is over Interstate 43. The cost of the works and demolition of the annex was already estimated at over $5 million. However, county officials have not stated that the cost could exceed the $5.2 million budgeted for the demolition because of the discovery of asbestos in the building.
Officials have stated that the building was inspected by professionals prior to the work and demolition being scheduled. However, it appears that the presence of asbestos must have been overlooked during these initial inspections, and therefore the calculations on cost and the time frame estimated for the work to be carried out was were carried out without any knowledge of asbestos removal being required.
It has been revealed that there is actually an entire floor of asbestos insulation within the building, which was overlooked at inspection, and this is now expected to bump up both the cost and the timeframe involved with the demolition. The cost of removing the asbestos could increase the cost of the works by a further $1.7 million.
