A construction supervisor has received jail time after he was found to be involved in asbestos removal fraud in over 1,500 buildings across New York. Sheon DiMaio, who worked as a supervisor for asbestos removal company AAR, was sentenced to three and a half years in federal prison.
The two former owners of the Albany based company, Alexander and Raul Salvagno, were sentenced in 2004 to 25 and 19 years in prison. The pair also had to pay over $23 million according to reports.
Asbestos removal is a very specialized area, and there are many restrictions and regulations with regards to the removal of this substance. Asbestos is a carcinogenic substance, and can cause many health problems, both serious and even fatal.
In the latest conviction, the supervisor pled guilty to a number of charges, including that of the illegal removal of asbestos and getting others to engage in the illegal removal, as well as conspiracy to violate the Clean Air Act and the Toxic Substances Control Act.
